IPOH: Perak police seized 48 assault rifles and five machine guns during a raid on a double-storey shophouse in Taman Venice here on Friday evening. A 29-year-old man was arrested at the premises. Perak police chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Bulat said the man detained was a licensed weapons dealer whose permit had expired three years ago. He said the weapons, part of the mans supply for the armed forces, were only for exhibition purposes. "The man has been remanded for 14 days to facilitate investigations," he said. Police would want to know what the man has been up to over the last three years as such licences must be renewed annually. The raid was conducted by a team from narcotics department after a tip-off over alleged drug activities at the shophouse. However, when the team arrived at the scene, no drugs were found....

The self-called "'90s rocker girl" from West Milton is making a name for herself in local photography and, if she gets her wish, will market the comeback of the rock band A Perfect Circle. Brittany (Osman) Davis is a 2002 graduate of Milton-Union High School. Growing up, her mother always had a camera handy and one of Davis's favorite pastimes was looking through her mom's many photo albums. When Davis got her senior pictures, the photographer took her for a drive and did everything on location - opening her eyes to a new type of picture taking. Then at Sinclair, Davis took every photography class she could possibly take. So when her husband Derek Davis bought her a digital camera and offered his Photo Shop expertise. . . "The rest is history," she states, "We joined forces and have been unstoppable since." Davis says that Derek always admired photography, "and then he met me"....

Cross-dressers captivate people across China
Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 3:39:29 AM by Blog57 Team
Some might think of cross-dressing as high camp, but in China these days it could also be considered high art, or at the very least a bit of good clean fun. In the most high-profile example of this growing trend, a recent talent contest on China Central Television (CCTV) featured a young man who dressed like a woman and sang like a nightingale. This young showman so enchanted audiences that he walked away with third prize. Though Li Yugang's set consisted mainly of folk songs, he seemed to channel the spirit of Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), the great Peking Opera master who carved out a place for the national art form in the world pantheon of esteemed art. Indeed, the 28-year-old from the countryside of Jilin Province got his start by taking lessons from Mei's disciples. Despite these historical roots, Li has had to struggle against the longstanding stigma of men performing female roles, a technique that has fallen out of favour in the past half century....

Picking the perfect wedding photographer
Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 1:44:16 PM by Blog57 Team
Choosing a wedding photographer -- or photographers -- can be one of the most expensive and important components in planning a wedding. In a digital world, what's important, and is it worth the money? That depends on you how important photography is to you and your fiancé. According to Eron Laber, one half of Milwaukee's Front Room Photography, 2483 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., more money doesn't necessarily equal a better product. (Editor's note: Front Room Photography is a marketing partner of OnMilwaukee.com, and its wedding-related photos appear throughout this Wedding Guide.) "There are very expensive traditional photographers out there, but if you're not into traditional photography, then you wouldn't consider it better," says Laber. But most photographers are expensive for a reason....

Postcards from China

Chinese artist Hong Lei doesn't normally have a shaved head or wear a wedding dress. But he does appear this way in his photographic work "I Dreamt of Being Killed by My Father When I Was Flying Over an Immortal Land." This work, more than 6 feet long, joins more than 100 works by 60 contemporary Chinese artists in the exhibition "Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China," currently on display at the The Nasher Museum of Art. "It's a window to see a culture changing at an unimaginable speed," co-curator Christopher Phillips said of the exhibition. In Hong's art, he presents himself in various poses, including flying through a star-studded night sky over a shimmering sea and a fog-shrouded forest. As a child, he had wanted to be an artist, but his father, a strict Army veteran, had opposed it and thought of art only as a hobby, 46-year-old Hong, said in a recent interview at the museum....
