SEBASTOPOL, Calif. -- It makes total sense with prices of digital cameras rapidly shrinking that more folks than ever will be wrapping and unwrapping these fervently craved devices in the weeks to come. Yes, such pixel-packed stocking stuffers possess seductive new features yet trying to create artful and arresting images straight out-of-the box can be frustrating. Happily, next month digital camera enthusiasts traveling to and in northern California can cure the digital blues and get their photography questions answered at a pre-Macworld bookstore reading and Macworld events: http://www.oreilly.com/go/macworld2007. On Jan. 7, a team of O'Reilly Media's best-selling authors kicks off an event-jammed week with an "Ask the Experts" panel discussion. Best-selling authors and photographers Mikkel Aaland, Stephen Johnson, Ken Milburn, and Derrick Story appear at Book Passage, a beloved San Francisco Bay Area independent bookstore, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge....

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Photography competition, Colours of Brunei, is on to create increased awareness and promote travel around the Sultanate. Brunei Tourism Board CEO Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamed said the contest for the best picture of Brunei Darussalam captured by digital camera, played a vital role in boosting the nation's tourism industry. "We supported a similar project last year (themed Faces of Brunei) and we will continue to support this year's project. A pictune pens a thousand words," said the CEO in a phone interview yesterday. He said in the previous competition, pictures of Brunei's water villages, beautiful mosques, architecture and cultural activities had pulled tourists into the country. The photos, published in a magazine of the same name, had successfully provided a preview of the uniqueness of the nation, added Sheikh Jamaluddin....

Parma man recognized for creating first digital camera

Steve Sasson and his wife, Cynthia, rarely discuss photography around the dinner table, and he even often misplaces his best camera - but the photography world will never forget this Parma resident. As he shows off his clunky-looking eight pound camera, Sasson is almost apologetic. ?If I had known that 30 years later this would be nearly as interesting to people I would have made it prettier,? he said. The camera, created by Sasson, is the world?s first-ever digital camera. Sasson invented it while working as a research engineer for Eastman Kodak. He remembers December 9, 1975 as a red letter day. He and Cynthia were finalizing their move to Irondequoit and a camera he had been working on recorded its first image. The project started from a hallway conversation he had with his supervisor....

Digital Focus: Digital Photography Goodies in Vista, Part 1
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 1:45:07 PM by Blog57 Team
Five years ago, around the time that Digital Focus launched, Windows XP appeared on the scene and replaced Windows 98, Me, and 2000 on many desktops. Windows XP didn't have many features especially for digital photographers, but that's not too surprising. Digital photography was still in its infancy in those days. Today, digital photography is all grown up, and Windows Vista--Microsoft's new operating system--has been designed accordingly. This week I'm giving you a peek at the bits of Vista that cater to photographers like you and me. (Full disclosure: I work as a user assistance writer for Microsoft.) By the way, Vista is slated for release within the next few months; read "Vista Delivery Date to PC Manufacturers Slips" for the latest estimate....

Mysterious images to make viewers forget

While her peers in abstract photography have largely embraced digital cameras and photo manipulation software, Cover has never used either. She has lugged around the same medium-format film camera for a dozen years, even after it got dunked in a swamp. When Cover wants to make digital prints, she has to develop the film, make prints in her home darkroom, then scan the prints into her computer. Timewise, it's the difference between knitting a sweater and picking one up at Nordstrom. Cover (the name rhymes with "clover") doesn't care about that. Her relish for photography can't be separated from the darkroom experience. "I love being in the darkroom, the running water, the quiet," Cover said, tucked into a leather chair at her home on Birch Lake. Many of Cover's images are hushed and gauzy, as if they were captured inside a snow globe....
