| | | First Edition Cycling News for January 23, 2007 | | Posted Tuesday, January 23, 2007 3:10:56 PM by Blog57 Team | | The divide between the most powerful race organisers in the world and the world's governing body of cycling has never been so deep. For over three years, the Grand Tour organisers, spearheaded by Tour de France management ASO, and the UCI have been in constant conflict over the sport's most recent reform, the ProTour. Now, unable to come to an agreement, the two sides will take their fight to the European Commission. Cyclingnews' Hedwig Kröner spoke to Patrice Clerc, the ASO president, about the conflict and the organisation's future plans. The organisers of the three Grand Tours, the ASO, the RCS (Giro d'Italia), and Unipublic (Vuelta España) have long objected to the ProTour model. They call the forced inclusion of the 20 ProTour teams 'a closed system' and have came up with their own set of team selection criteria late last year.... | |

| | | FEATURE-Endangered gorillas prosper in heart of Africa | | Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 1:20:09 PM by Blog57 Team | | PARC NATIONAL DES VOLCANS, Rwanda, Dec 13 (Reuters) - One hour's trek into the Rwandan rainforest, a crunching sound breaks the silence that hangs over the misty thick bush. Slow and loud, it lasts for a few minutes, then stops abruptly. Suddenly a gorilla's face peers through the giant nettles to look at the tourists who have sweated along jungle trails to catch a glimpse of him and his family. The 200-kg (440-lb) male, the silver-grey saddle on his back signalling maturity, studies his visitors. Then, his curiosity satisfied, the mountain gorilla emerges from the bush, crawls to the top of a clearing on the lush mountainside and continues loudly chomping on his bamboo shoot. A female follows and stretches out next to the silverback, keeping a careful eye on the intruders as her babies playfully fight, thumping their chests and rolling down the hill.... | |

| | | The Photographic Portrait Prize 2006 | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 1:24:30 PM by Blog57 Team | | Mobile phones make portrait photographers of us all, but this outstanding show is a masterclass. First-prize winner, Richard Boll's Joe, may superficially resemble a snap, but shirtless and tattooed under Brighton sun, Joe is actually meticulously lit. And there's no mistaking the classical side-lighting in Anna Bauer's Jungs, Living Room (second), Kiran Master's debt to Jeff Wall in his mysteriously bland Untitled (third) or Kyoko Hamada's Emily and her Grandmother (fourth). See more pictures from the exhibition here Less impressive is the Deloitte Prize (for under-25s) winner, Erin Kornfeld's Prudence and Julie (at Sunday Breakfast) - lusciously colourful but disappointingly transparent. The competition's traditional internationalism now extends, topically, to Pyongyang and Beijing, but overshadowing all is the quiet humiliation in Jacob Silverberg's Iraqi Man Waits for the US Marines to Leave His House.... | |

| | | Secrets Shared | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 11:27:20 AM by Blog57 Team | | Donna DeCesare's photos raise a curtain on the darkest side of childhood. From her current featured work documenting exploited Central American and Colombian children in "Sharing Secrets: Children's Portraits Exposing Stigma," to her years of telling the stories of youths affected by gang fighting and civil wars across the Americas, her photos viscerally confirm that the messes made by adults wreak havoc on the lives of children. "Sharing Secrets" is part of the Open Society Institute's "Moving Walls 12" exhibit, which opened at the institute's Manhattan headquarters on Sept. 14. Among other current projects, DeCesare is building a bilingual educational Web site called "Destiny's Children," which she describes as "a collection of photo narratives exploring how war, trauma, and gangs impact the personal choices and social stigmas faced by young people across the Americas." The specific images in "Destiny's Children" are a compilation of her work over a more than 10-year period, with young people involved in gangs in Los Angeles, Guatemala, and El Salvador.... | |
