January 25, 2007 - As Alice, of Wonderland fame, might have put it, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is revealing a curiouser and curiouser understanding of the free market. The one-time follower of free-market champion Milton Friedman is sounding less and less like the man he claimed to admire. Schwarzenegger's recent bow to global warming idolatry reveals his latest misunderstanding of how economies work, to say nothing of his loose grasp of science. On signing an executive order last week, establishing the world's first “low carbon standard for transportation fuels," the governor boasted that the mandate “requires fuel providers to ensure that the mix of fuel they sell into the California market meets, on average, a declining standard for greenhouse-gas emissions" and other green-inspired goals....

Team Gerolsteiner has a "simple recipe" for the 2007 season, according to team manager Hans-Michael Holczer. "Keep on going like before." With 41 victories from 16 different riders, the team can look back on a successful 2006 season and calmly look forward to an equally successful 2007. If the team had a nickname, it would be "The Originals," Holczer said at the team's presentation Tuesday at its sponsor's corporate headquarters. "We go our own way," he said proudly. That way includes the development of and reliance on young, usually German, riders. "Young" is a key word. The team boasts seven newcomers, none of whom is older than 25. "Team Gerolsteiner will be one of the youngest ProTour teams in the 2007 season," Holczer noted. He is also pleased that the team doesn't rely on just one or two captains, but has a broad range of riders who are capable of bringing in big wins....

MILLBRAE ? For Christopher Buttner, diving into the ocean depths is like going to another world. "Watching men land on the moon, it seemed spectacular to hop, skip and jump across huge areas of terrain and come into contact with alien life forms," he said, perhaps stretching his recollection of the 1969 lunar landing. "Somebody once said to me, 'Until I can visit other planets, I scuba dive.'" Buttner, 44, is vice president of the Northern California Underwater Photographic Society, which hosts a free Photoshop seminar at 7:15 tonight at New Vision United Methodist Church, 450 Chadbourne Ave. in Millbrae. The self-described "water rat" from Long Island, N.Y. moved to the Golden State after putting his boyhood dream on hold, eventually starting a music public relations firm....

'Babel's' World: Just a Big Ball of Yarns
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 3:08:49 PM by Blog57 Team
"Babel" is something of a new flavor for the movie business: It might be called a "serious movie lite." It takes a sophisticated idea -- which the filmmaker has already explored in gripping if occasionally impenetrable detail in a smaller film -- and remakes the same points with a flashier cast, a lot less memorably, with everything laid on with a trowel. ....
